Action Line: Parking at curb can cost you
Friday, September 4, 2009
By Dennis Rockstroh, Mercury News

Q Dennis, as a former cop, I enjoy reading your answers to questions related to "police things."

This is in regard to parking on a corner (Action Line, Aug. 24).

"Can a car park at the corner, blocking the access from the curb?

The California Vehicle Code says that you may not park in front of or upon that portion of a curb that has been cut down, lowered or constructed to provide wheelchair accessibility to the sidewalk."

I wanted to remind you that parking at any corner is unlawful under CVC 12500(a): Prohibited Stopping, Standing, or Parking.

No person shall stop, park, or leave standing any vehicle whether attended or unattended, except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance with the directions of a peace officer or official traffic control device, in any of the following places: (a) Within an intersection, except adjacent to curbs as may be permitted by local ordinance.

By definition the corners of an intersection fall within that intersection.

A Thanks, Pete.

Q My brother heard the $3,500 to $4,500 in the cash for clunkers program is taxable if you live in a state with a personal income tax.

Do you know if this is the case?

Bill
