Pizarro: Movie theater reborn as the Retro Dome
Sunday, August 30, 2009
By Sal Pizzaro, Mercury News

Scott and Shannon Guggenheim are putting together one of the great recycling acts of Silicon Valley.

Their Campbell-based company, Guggenheim Entertainment, is turning the shuttered Century 25 movie theater on Saratoga Avenue into a live performance venue called the Retro Dome.

Their enterprise kicks off Friday with "Schoolhouse Rock Live!" — a show they produced in San Francisco and later in San Jose.

Live productions will take place in one of the 40-year-old theater's two auditoriums; in coming months, they plan to renovate the other auditorium to showcase neoclassic movies like "The Godfather" and serve concessions tied to the show or movie's theme (cannoli, anyone?).

"At the Retro Dome, everything old becomes new again," Shannon Guggenheim said.

Friday night's opening performance should be a lot of fun for anyone who's seen it before or just remembers the cartoon shorts from Saturday morning TV in the 1970s. San Jose City Councilman Pete Constant and his staff also will have roles in the opening night production (Constant will appear in the "I'm Just a Bill" number).

The show will run Thursdays through Sundays until Oct. 4. Tickets are $24-$36, and you can get them by calling 408-404-7711 or going to www.theretrodome.com.
