San Jose Council Responds To Officers' Video
Tuesday, June 2, 2009
By CBS5/KCBS News

SAN JOSE (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― A controversial video aimed at a community activist is raising some eyebrows at San Jose's City Hall.

But, for now, councilmembers seem to be OK with police officers voicing their opinions on YouTube.

The Video shows Raj Jayadev, a vocal critic of the San Jose Police Department, speaking at a City Council meeting. However, there are pop-up messages in the video, mocking the speaker for his delivery and use of English.

Should the Police Officers' Association have paid a public relations firm to produce the video?

"It looks like the Police Officers' Association is doing what a lot of other organizations are doing and trying to use new media," responded councilmember Ash Kalra.

Councilmember Pete Constant, a former police officer, pointed out that the video offers the public an additional viewpoint about issues in the community.

"All too often when you see activism, it's the local voice of a small minority of people, and I think that's what the POA is really trying to show," Constant said.

Jayadev expressed concern that the video would have a chilling effect on free speech at San Jose City Hall.

"People speak out at City Council meetings because they think they're going to be heard, the messages are going to be received," he said.

Mayor Chuck Reed said he was not in a position to comment because he had not yet seen the video.
