The San Tomas West Neighborhood Association celebrated its first community block party on July 14, attended by more than 300 West San Jose and Campbell
residents. The association, representing about 2,500 homes, spans West San Jose and Campbell borders, and is bounded by Payne Avenue, Campbell Avenue, San Tomas Expressway and San Tomas Aquino Road. Since its inception in November 2006, the association has worked to unite its community through bi-monthly meetings, education nights, and most recently, the block party.
The festivities on the closed street of Clarita Avenue included a barbecue dinner with potluck side dishes to share complete with a make-it-yourself sundae station for dessert. In addition, music was provided by a DJ, along with live music by the local band Trinity. Entertainment also included arts and crafts booths, jump houses, a basketball court and even a pet parade. Honored guests were District 1 Councilman Pete Constant, Campbell Mayor Dan Furtado, representatives from San Jose Fire Department’s Station 14 and members of the San Jose Police Department’s mounted unit, to name a few. “Getting to know our neighbors and city leaders, building partnerships and a strong community in our neighborhood, creating memories that our children will cherish—this is what it is all about; this is why the STWNA was formed, and this is something we are proud of,” said association president Heather Sutton.
