San Jose's Calabazas Library to be rebuilt and expanded
Sunday, July 25, 2007
Bay City News Service

The outdated Calabazas Library in San Jose will be rebuilt in its current location with more books, additional computers and at least 3,000 more square feet.
City Councilman Pete Constant, the San Jose Public Library Department and the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department were all involved in the decision to go ahead with the new library.

Constant is also searching for funding to add a 1,000-square-foot community meeting room.

"The fact that we had to have community meetings about this project at facilities in other parts of the district illustrates the need for a community meeting room in this neighborhood," Constant said. "I will work to ensure that they have a place to meet."

The current 5,880-square-foot Calabazas Library, which will remain open until further notice, is located at 1230 Blaney Ave.

Construction could begin as soon as winter 2008 and completion is expected in 2010.

"After two community meetings and countless conversations with residents it became clear that the majority of people felt strongly about rebuilding the library at its current location," Constant said.
